The lecture, given by Dr. David Gilman Romno, will cover the latest developments and discoveries at Mt. Lykaion, including the excavation of the altar of Zeus on the southern peak of the mountain, with the discovery of a Mycenaean shrine with earlier precedents; its interpretation as the prototype for the ash altar at the Sanctuary of Zeus at Olympia and the idea that Mt. Lykaion was the birthplace of Zeus and the model for Olympia; the discovery of burned femurs from the Mycenaean period and continuing through to the Hellenistic period, proving that there was a continuity of the cult of Zeus from Mycenaean through Hellenistic times; the discovery of the early stadium at Mt. Lykaion near the mountain top and the idea that the athletic contests held there may go back to Mycenaean times; the recent discovery of the early Sanctuary of Pan in the lower mountain meadow; the only visible and measurable hippodrome in the Greek world, with a parallel stadium nearby; the idea that there was a Mycenaean Pan-Hellenic Sanctuary at Mt. Lykaion attracting elites, worshippers and athletes to the mountain top; the discovery of a small Ionic prostyle pentastyle building dating to the fourth century BCE in the lower sanctuary.
