Nature-Inspired Multifunctional Materials and Surfaces

Friday, March 6, 2026 12pm to 12:50pm

This is a past event.

Dr. Marshall Ming (Georgia Southern Univesity) will give a joint colloquium hosted by the Departments of Physics & Astronomy, and Chemistry & Biochemistry on Friday, March 6. Inspired by nature, our research focuses on multifunctional polymeric materials and coatings — including super-repellent (water- and oil-repellent) surfaces, anti-fouling surfaces, antimicrobial coatings, anti-fogging/frost-resisting coatings, self-replenishing coatings, and smart coatings for detecting early metal corrosion and preemptive corrosion protection — with promising real-world applications. The seminar will also highlight Georgia Southern University's new PhD Program in Materials Science. This program offers doctoral students the flexibility to acquire both the breadth of knowledge and depth in a specific area of the materials science discipline as the requisite foundation to conduct basic and applied research and solve advanced problems. Students who are interested in the program are encouraged to stay after the talk to meet with Dr. Ming.
